I led a group of earnest quilters through Elizabeth Hartman's Legendary. Yes Big Foot is alive and could be found at Bear's Paw Quilts!
I am having trouble posting pictures today for some reason so will have to try another day to share the other Big Foots...Big Feet....;)
Speaking of big, big doings in the Yukon this week, Prince William and Katherine will soon be here! Can't wait.
This shawl was wonderful to knit up. I used Rowan Baby Merino silk do in "Candy" and I increased the body by 16 rows for a bit more length. It was featured as a class at our local shop (Itsy Bitsy Yarn Shop) and it was a lot of fun. I challenged myself to knit the cables without a cable needle, it was very freeing to just the stitches drop and sit there. They really don't disappear!

I was so excited to complete a shawl that I decided that I need to make more.

In other knitty news I decided to unravel the cabled cardigan pattern I had started, I just wasn't enjoying it. You know what? Life is too short and I knit for pleasure, not to pressure myself. Instead I used the yarn to cast on a cardigan for my daughter Lisa. I chose Knitbot's Rosemont Cardigan. So far it is an easy knit, the instructions are clear and easily understood. This is happening!

Something I learned this week was the importance of blocking. I don't usually as hats and mittens tend not to really need it, at least the ones I make are fine. After seeing how much better looking my Cancan shawl looked after blocking I pulled out my Nordic Wind shawl which I finished up several months ago. It was a little small for me so I hadn't used it yet. After blocking the size has increased and I love it.
I love Lopi, it's a hardy wool that stands up to the wear and tear of life. I live in the north, winters are long and cold, and Lopi is a good staple to have in the knitting basket.

Just for fun, and because I wanted to, I splurged and ordered a book and some yarn from across the world.

Kate Davies Designs

I have been a fan of Kate's for quite a while and when I saw this book and yarn I knew it was something I just had to try. The Buachaille yarn is just lovely to hold and her book is simply a feast for the eyes. The history geek in me absolutely loves books that tell me a story along with the patterns. To me it's just as important as the designs. The story pulls me in and anchors me, giving me enough to draw from while knitting that I can dream. I haven't decided yet which pattern I will start with but I made sure I had enough yarn to complete a couple of the smaller projects.

Kate has a new book coming out with several designers that is all about Haps and I can't wait, I am officially putting it on my Christmas list people so tell my family!

Finally, since as you know my love of knitting is only rivalled by my love of quilting, I finished an Xmas table runner! I chose fabric that should take it through the winter season so could be used for a longer time period.
Love it when something comes off the needles and it's just right! I've been working on these finger-less mitts/gloves by Sylvia Olsen in my spare time. Mostly I've carried the project back and forth to work all week with little progress. But now, the left hand is done. Off to the right hand. I better get right on it so I don't lose steam. I do love how it feels on my hand.
Speaking of mittens, I picked up some yarn to start making mittens for next winter (hey, Christmas is only 7 months away!) and was pleased to find the silk blend Noro that caught my eye totally match my tattoo. Hmmmm...these may be for me.
Today is about more then tidying, it's about garbage bags and dust bunnies (indoor cat and dog, shall I say more?). I'm not sure if I will get to do anything quilt related today but I will be thinking about it!

I am thinking about how much fun I've had teaching this year so far. I love guiding people into a love of fabric and possibilities. I'm quite enthusiastic about it! My teaching style I feel is laid back, it all works and if it doesn't, well it's a learning experience and we've spent time with each other and fabric so how that can be wrong?

Since January I've taught 4 different quilts at our local shop and even went north to Inuvik in January to do a workshop, instructing on another quilt. Wow...that's a lot of quilting! Good thing I love it, I don't want it to end.

This is Homestead by Fig Tree and Company. I love this quilt and have made it twice myself, once in the adapted lap size in blue and one full size in a range of more little girl friendly fabrics. The ladies I worked with were so much fun, each with a different style.

I've also been leading a group through Elizabeth Hartman's Fancy Forest Quilt. We are so close to being done, only one more session left with thistles and everyone will be ready to put their tops together!

Sylvia knits in the tradition of the old Coastal Salish knitters, inspired by her home, her family and people, learned from the Cowichan sweaters she has knit over the years. Its a wonderful technique that makes colourwork quick and fun...with no carry overs and with stretchiness! Wahooo...love the stretchiness.

She brought several lovelies for us to look at and aspire to.

Sylvia is an amazing story teller, I could sit and listen to her talk for hours. Seriously.

We worked on a toque for the morning and I picked up an extra kit for fingerless gloves and her latest book, Knitting Stories. I love this book, and the poem she wrote within really touched me to the core. This is my life, the life of my mother and grandma and aunties...I was struck and this woman got me.

The technique was so much fun, and not to be all hippy girl, but the yarn really does talk to you if you let it. Once you get the rhythm, you can't stop!

My toque was finished in a couple of days and now I am working on my fingerless gloves.

Today we will spend time with family and friends. We will eat, and we will laugh and swap stories. We will create memories.

I am thankful for these hidden gems of time. In our busy lives we seem to rush from one job to another, from one task to another. I strive in my daily life to take advantage of the small moments of time, the 20 minutes here and there when I am driving each of my daughters to work or school, this is where we have our chance to talk one on one, whether about funny things or about deeper topics. The few moments on the street when I run into a friend as I am running errands on my coffee break (did you sign up for mystery?) or at the grocery store.

I am thankful to see my daughters growing up to be beautiful, caring young women. They strive to make a difference in their own ways. They are good friends to those around them and genuinely care of about the world at large.

I am thankful for my family who are far away. While we don't see each other very often, they are always in my thoughts and I speak of them daily.

And I am thankful for Mr. Grumpypants. He bought me a new laptop!!!! LOL.

Seriously though, he tries every day. And he cares. What more can you ask for?

Have a wonderful thanksgiving everyone. Tonight we eat turkey!

Inside we are piecing and stitching snowmen!

Here is my class quilt from this week. I chose Let it Snow from Farmhouse Threads.

Let it Snow pattern by Farmhouse Threads

I have been very excited waiting for a chance to teach this class. I love embroidery and was hoping to instil a little bit of excitement and possibly open the door to some new hand stitchers. My wish may have come true!! The first night was all about piecing, learning to make snowball blocks and flying geese. Over the years, I've encountered so many quilters who seem to have a fear of flying geese without actually trying it first, or whom has possibly given up after the first couple don't work out. The geese came together quite well for everybody. As this is a scrappy quilt, I showed them the old fashioned no wasted fabric method which involves cutting a square in half and sewing on the cut bias (as opposed to sewing on the diagnol of a square and cutting away the remaining fabric). As long as you are gently, the bias is not a scary place to be. By the way, the pattern from Farmhouse Threads is clear and concise and shows how to make the perfect geese without a fuss.

The second night of the class was about learning to embroider. I happy danced all day waiting for the evening to come. As you need the completed top before beginning to embroider, I created a special take home project for my students, a simple snowmen to give them some experience in both backstitching and french knots as well as learning how to trace pictures onto fabric.

Everyone was given a scrap of white fabric, some batting and a skein of DMC embroidery floss. Instead of adding a stabilyzer to the back of the fabric, we stitched right through the fabric and the batting, giving a little quilting as we stitched.

My favourite part of the evening was just enjoying the quiet and small talk, while everyone practised their hand stitching. When one proclaimed that she just wanted to keep stitching my day was made.

All in all, a great class. Before I forget, one of my students was able to complete her entire top and was ready to start stitching!

Recently I received the latest instalment of the Colonial Gatherings Club. Another lovely piece by Paulette Stewart. I've made a bit of a start on it, such luscious colours of threads. I may have to put it aside for a bit though as I joined a Christmas ornament exchange and really need to get stitching on it.

Have you started stitching for Christmas?

Edited to add: I realized I haven't shown the finished piece of the last instalment by Scarlett House. Love it, haven't sewn it into a finished pillow yet.

It's by It's Sew Emma and it is such a fun pattern to piece together. I chose to use fresh floral and fabrics that reminded me of summer. I gave up my self-imposed rule of not ever crossing over while free motion quilting to create loops and circles. I am not all that comfortable with crossing my lines, I much prefer stipples that never cross. It's good to push yourself though sometimes as I think this quilt needed some fun loops.

When I saw this patern at It's Sew Emma I just knew it would be fun for a beginner class at our local quilt shop. I was very pleased to discover that everyone enjoyed it as much as I.

Here are some shots of the quilts in progress during the class. Unfortunately I am missing the picture of the completed baby quilt someone managed to finish before the end of the second night.

Once again I have a lap top...whoop whoop!

Be warned I will be going crazy updating photos, etc...try not to be too over(under)whelmed!

Also I am reinserting my blog lists, time to start visiting your blogs again! Cannot wait to get reacquainted.

In the meantime, as I patiently get everything set up once again, here is a litle blast from the past, one of my most favourite little quilts that was given to a special friend. I really need to make one for myself!

Summer is slipping by at a furious pace.Remember when you were a kid and summer lasted forever?

I have been working on my class quilts so can't share until after the September sign ups. So excited!

I spent a time stitching this weekend, something I haven't done enough of this year. I so love the feel of linen in my hand, the smooth wooden hoop and playing with delicious hand dyed fibres.

Above is the last instalment received from the Colonial Gatherings Club with Dyeing 2 Stitch. It's called Button Posies by The Scarlett House. I should be receiving the next shipment soon, looking forward to that.

Have a wonderful week!
Today's project is part of The Colonial Gatherings Club hosted by Dyeing to Stitch. It's a year long club featuring two designers: Plum Street Samplers and The Scarlett House. This was the first instalment of 2015 by Paula Stewart of Plum Street Samplers. All that's left is the house!

I already have instalment number 2 so I am a bit behind but I am hoping to catch up!

Happy Sunday,
Try as I might using my smart phone, it was just too much of an effort writing the type of posts I enjoy. I like words and lots of them! Instagram is more user friendly for phone use.

But now I have a little tablet and I think this may work for now. Let's see how frustrated I get!

My knitting has continued and I have now learned to knit socks, on a circular. Love it! I really enjoy the bulkier sock weight, the fingering weight is just so tiny.

My quilting is going strong. I have been working on class projects as I am teaching three quilts in the fall session.

Yay! I love helping others find their joy in fabric.

Today though is about more then quilting or knitting. Two dear friends, after many years together, got married in a simple, beautiful outdoor ceremony. Dave and Sandy are two people who we have chosen as family and who have also chosen us. Many happy memories we have sharing holiday meals or just hanging out on a Saturday.

The wedding took place on a point about a 15 minute walk in the bush, overlooking a ravine.

They are so cute. They were in charge of the wedding procession music. That's a lot of pressure so far out in the bus, away from plug ins and wired speakers, but they did it!

Now we are home and can relax. Have a wonderful weekend!Vivianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11632745448099979353noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-169798511047603541.post-26967914112617051112015-02-07T13:52:00.000-08:002015-02-08T07:17:07.241-08:00Northern Knitting I love knitting for many reasons. I'm a tactile person, I love to touch, to feel, to hold it in my hands. My favourite needles to work with are birch, the wood just comes alive in my hands. I enjoy knitting with wool and wool blends. From the soft and beautiful alpaca to the sturdy Icelandic wools. I would be quite happy with a little meadow of sheep close by.

Notice I said close by, not to have for my own, I appreciate the hard work in raising and producing. Believe me I will pay for your beautiful products.

As I have been introducing my friends into the world of knitting these past few months (they are little knitting demons now, there's no stopping them) I find I have been branching out, expanding my knitting choices and I am loving it.

In the past I tended to stick with scarves and hats. Scarves are easy and I would make them up as I go. Now I am trying more intricate patterns, actual patterns! Those that know me know I'm not a pattern follower, but I have found some wonderful designs and designers out there, I can't keep up! I want to knit it all.

I have found many free patterns out there, which are great introductions into different types and styles. If you get a chance, have a look through Ravelry sometime and you will be amazed with the creativity so many have ( I'm NorthernKnitter2 on there - I've started keeping track of my knitting projects there).

I absolutely swoon though over a well published pattern. I love the paper, the photographs and the personality that shines through. Never Not Knitting for example produces a gorgeous publication and her designs are well written and easy to follow.

My current project is published by Quince & Co. and is the work of designer Carrie Bostick Hoge. Easy to follow, and the photo and paper it's printed on are wonderful!

This is my first baby sweater and it's coming along great. I am hoping to be done this weekend. I have the hood portion nearly stitched then all that's left will be the sleeves.

I really enjoy the portable nature of knitting, I can carry it with me and work on it in small snatches of time, like a coffee break or while waiting for my daughter's basketball practice to end. Here are my other daughter and I knitting at the library while waiting for Lisa's practice to end.

I'm so happy Jen has also found a love of knitting. Above she is working on a pair of purple mittens.

Today though I have been pulled away from my baby hoodie. We have had extreme Arctic air warnings and with temps as low as -37C (lower with the wind chill) this week. This morning was no exception, so I bundled myself up in a quilt and started a new project. I picked out some Alafosslopi from my stash and began a shawl called Nordic Wind by cabinfour (on Ravelry). It calls for Icelandic wool and its just what I need to work on today.
Do you knit? Or crochet? That's a skill I have yet to learn.

Take care and stay warm! Vivian
Last weekend we got togethet so I could introduce them to the world of quilting. As they were brand new sewers I thought the jelly roll race quilt would be a great jumping off point. They could learn some skills (avoiding the rotary cutter for now) and come away with something tangible to whet their appetites.

It went well with only one not done as her machine quit working.

We had a lot of fun and were exhausted by the end of the day. I was so busy I didn't even work on my own quilt.

This weekend I decided I needed to work on something fun and something that would make me smile. I pulled out my Berenstain Bears jelly roll and layer cake and whipped up my own quilt top. I loved these books when I was a kid so the fabric brings back happy memories. This quilt will be just for me!
Now to find something to fill my Sunday.
I'm instructing at our local quilt shop again this session and I managed to get my two models done in time for sign up day on Saturday.

First is Homestead by Fig Tree and Company. I love this quilt. The first time I saw it, it just touched my heart. It called to the little girl in me. I chose some charming fabrics that just made me happy. I quilted it myself with an all over leaf and flower pattern.

I will also be instructing the pattern Swoon by Thimbleblossoms. It was so big we had to fold one row back to fit it in! I quilted it as well with a denser stipple amongst the block, a larger stipple around the blocks and finished it off with some handstitching in the star of the blocks.

And here it is before I quilted.

So far I am enjoying 2015!

Have a great day!
I hope everyone has had a safe and happy Christmas.
I can't believe the year has gone by so quickly.

It may seem like I've dropped off the face of the earth, its just my lack of a laptop that is creating this hole in my world! I can't quite get the hang of posting on my phone. I need all my fingers on a keyboard!

Thank you everyone that stopped in on the Sew Sisters Canadian Blogathon. It was really touching to read your comments.

I'm still stitching and knitting and yes quilting! In fact I am instructing at our local quilt shop now. It's just too mhch fun.

As it seems my phone is more user friendly using social media I have taken to using instagram for my photos. You can find me at @vrbales . I do miss my blog and blogger friends. next priority, get a laptop.

Have a wonderful New Year everyone!

I seem to excel when a long weekend appears. Most of the time, its a big production to get a sewing area set up (aka the kitchen) and there are only so many hours in the day.

But on long weekends I have time, and space, and the luxury of letting everyone fend for themselves.

Yay me!

This past weekend was no exception.

I completed the top for my Ziggarut quilt. My 13 year old has already claimed it so I better find a cool backing soon. The fabrics are mostly Marcia Derse and I picked them up in Anchorage a couple of years ago.

I really enjoyed this one.

I also nearly finished my Bargello Heart. I just need to find a fabric to nicely separate the heart from the border/feature fabric.

Since I had accomplished so much at my sewing machine, I treated myself to some alone time with my cross stitching. You may remember this is the project I agreed to finish off for a friend. It's "The Kiss" by Mirabilia.

Now to enjoy the roaring fire as the icy rain falls outside. It's winter's last grumble I hope.

Take care!
My latest project from Dyeing to Stitch's Colonial Gatherings Club arrived. It's a beautiful design by The Scarlett House that came with hand dyed linen and threads. YUM!
So when I decided to join a round robin this year I knew I had to use one of her designs.

I found one that would work perfectly for a group of stitchers.
It's Funky Flowers from the March/April 2013 issue of Just Cross Stitch.

I hope the other ladies enjoy it!

I also signed up for the Longest Days quilt retreat at the quilt shop in June and a quilting class in May. Have you heard of Judy Regan? She is a quilt instructor from Juneau, can't wait!

And for some exciting news I have been holding out on until now. I have a new job! It is a very positive move and I am very happy. For the last 8 years I have worked as a legal assistant in the residential school claim process. Because of the content (google IAP process if you want to learn more, I won't traumatize you here) and because of my daily contact with clients in crisis, I have had a difficult time emotionally and have worked really hard at trying to maintain a healthy home life (quilting has been an amazing outlet that has helped me be there for my family). After 8 years, the time has come for change and I am now in a completely different field working with a local utility company. It's a great change for me and I already feel the difference.

Now let's see what we can accomplish when our hearts are happy!

Life has changed a lot for me.

We just returned from a two week roadtrip back to Manitoba, my first time back in about five years. Jen, my oldest, just got her beginner's drivers license so she got in a lot of road time in many environments.
I was able to spend some time with my grandmother, she is 91 years and has been in the hospital for the last 5 weeks. Her kidneys are failing and they are making her comfortable.

I'll be back with more, just wanted to check in and let you know I'm still here and I have a lot of positive and fun news!!

Before I go though, when is spring coming? I got to see bare ground in some places on our trip and I am so jealous.

Fantastic hockey game ladies, you are all amazing.
Ok, on to some good stuff, I know I've been a bit absent but I've been busy. See the bag below? It hold four quilts that have been quilted and three have been bound, just the hand sewing of the binding to the back.
Tonight starts our local shop's birthday retreat which goes right through to Sunday afternoon. Being ever hopeful I packed 3 UFOs and something just for fun. My tub is ready!

It's also Rendezvous time in Whitehorse so I may be able to catch a few events in town this weekend (a little chainsaw throwing, longest beard contest, whose dog can drag a loaded pallet the furthest).

Have a fabulous weekend!
